Michel Bouvier

Jean-Philippe Nuel

Set in the centre of Val d’Isère some 300 m from the pistes, the Avenue Lodge Hotel opened its doors several days before the opening of the World Ski Championships in February 2009.
Having been approached by the proprietor Michel Bouvier, who had previously entrusted him with the design realization of his two Parisian establishments (Le Lavoisier and the hôtel de la Jatte), Jean-Philippe’s objective was to prove that the conviviality of winter sports can sit comfortably with a resolutely contemporary ambiance.
He therefore gave priority to space, both in the bedrooms and in the public areas, playing with the ‘rules of the mountain’ to create a very current space inspired by both the 1950’s and the development of winter sports.

Each of the 51 bedrooms presents a different typology, albeit with a common thread in terms of interior decoration. Jean-Philippe Nuel played with both materials and furniture, using natural cowhide – making each piece completely unique – for the Fil chair (Pascal Mourgue), mirror-finish stainless steel for the Bobine table (Michael Koenig), made here in a special height, fur for the bedcoverings and sophisticated fabrics from Pierre Frey.

The lounge bar and lobby area has been quite intentionally designed to be a real living space, both comfortable and spacious. Jean-Philippe Nuel has discreetly divided this space to provide two distinct ambiances: the lobby is conducive to relaxation, with a generous contemporary chimney extended by a decorative wooden screen. The lounge bar, in contrast, offers a more urban atmosphere, with an illuminated bar. The contemporary spirit of these spaces is reflected in the choice of seating from the Ligne Roset Contracts collection, customized for the Avenue Lodge: the Luca armchair, designed by Jean-Philippe Nuel himself and covered here in leather or natural cowhide, or a mixture of the two, and the Marguerite footstools in a special extra-size version.
